My Town

Abgelegt unter: EVO-BLOG — uwe @ 12:03 pm

We were asked to introduce the place we live in. Here we go - with greatest pleasure :-) )jena_google_earth.jpg

For the past 20 something years I ‘ve been living in the town of Jena (Thuringia, Germany) - and I still like it a lot and wouldn’t move anywhere else. Why? It’s a small university town of about 100,000 inhabitants (20,000 students). Nice surroundings, small old centre. It combines the best aspects of living in a rather small place with the advantages of a university town: You know people, there’s lot of nice pubs and cafes, a fairly vibrant cultural life of all sorts… Just great to be here. Some people might find it a bit too provincial - well, I don’t.

Here’s a satellite view of the place:

And here’s a nightly view from my living room window:

If you like, you can have a look at one of Jena’s webcams. This one here is installed on top of the towerlike
high-rise building in the centre of town
(you see it in the nightly photograph).

You need to have Java installed to be able to use it! Enjoy…

And here’s a little voice message . Again, just testing…

welcome message

  1. Welcome to blogosphere, Uwe and it was great to hear your voice all the way from Germany. I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the second or third largest city in the world (about 18 million inhabitants)so life is very busy. I spend my weekends in the countryside though, to breathe some fresh air and hug trees :-)
Warm regards from this side of the world.

  2. Thanks for the comment, Bee. Right now, Brazil sounds like a great alternative - we have about -20 degree at night. Gosh, it is freezing! BTW, your blog is great, very informative. And - it is WorPress as well :-) )
    Take care, Uwe

  3. Hi, Uwe,
Well done. Like the blog. How did you post the sound file? Is it like posting a photo? I.e. can you just upload a sound file from your own computer, and must it be a file which is hosted somewhere on the Internet already?

    Danke.

  4. Marco -

thanks for your comment. Yeah, photos (almost any file type, for that matter) are handled like that: In Worpress, you have a dialogue to upload and handle photos, soundfiles… etc just below the wysiwig editor. You upload your file and drag&drop it into your editor. Voila - that’s it. Works like magic :-)
The only thing that is not standard is the nifty little player button that offers the tagging for deli.cio.us as well, this is a plugin. But it turns up automatically as well - as soon as the mp3 file is in place.

It is also possible to include files that are stored somewhere on the net.

I am not yet that long into Wordpress, but it’s a great tool. BTW, edublog runs on WP as well…
    Take care,
    Uwe

  5. Hi there Uwe
What a nice blog- I like the visuals, and loved the music on the first instalment (it was quite long and I fast forwarded to get to the show!).
Looking forward to hearing how you learners enjoy making the radio show.
